Though you could argue that Stone Cold Steve Austin was at the peak of his popularity in the late 1990s, he was still a bona fide megastar in the year 2002. Which is probably why when asked to lose to Brock Lesnar in an impromptu match on Monday Night Raw, he didn’t take too well to the idea.

In one of the most famous walkouts in WWE history, Austin took his proverbial ball home after refusing to do the honors for a young, up-and-coming Lesnar. He’d been scheduled to lose on the 10 June showing of Raw in Atlanta, but it was the fact that the match had absolutely zero build that didn’t sit well with him.

In Austin’s eyes, as he was still selling tickets and moving merchandise, booking him to lose out of nowhere—and on free television, at that—didn’t make a whole lot of sense. In his defense, he’s since said that if Austin vs Lesnar was indeed the direction they wanted to go, then he’d happily have gone through with the program, as long as it was promoted well in advance.

Now there’s a novel concept…
