Rey Mysterio's WWE contract may have run out on February 27th 2015, making him a free man, but Rey has wanted to leave WWE and pursue other interests and opportunities for around a year. Mysterio's last in-ring appearance for the company was a quick loss to Bad News Barrett on the April 7th, 2014 Raw. Since that appearance, Rey has been trying to get WWE to let him out of his contract so he can work for AAA, Lucha Underground and other non-WWE gigs. Rey has been with the WWE for twelve years now and, while there have been ups and downs, he has done pretty much everything he could in the company and it was time to move on. WWE didn't see it that way, however, and kept automatically extending his contract to make up for time Rey missed due his various injuries. WWE's stubbornness prompted a FreeRey campaign on Twitter. Many people felt that it was unfair that WWE were blocking Rey from going elsewhere after he had been with the company for so long and had sacrificed so much. It was a petty move on the company's part to try and block Rey from working elsewhere and it remains to be seen how much it will effect Rey and WWE's business relationship in the future.
