WWE can decide who it wants to push, but - as the Roman Reigns has found out over recent years - only the fans get to decide who becomes emblematic of an entire wrestling generation.

Face of the Attitude Era Stone Cold Steve Austin received Vince McMahon's blessing in 1996 with success in King of the Ring and the now-iconic Austin 3:16 victory speech that followed.

Initially intent on portraying him as a no-good heel, the company was surprised over the ensuing months by the realisation that edgy late-90s fans were now prepared to cheer those who refused to abide by the rule-book.

For anyone who remained unconvinced, the sight of a bloodied Austin determined that he wouldn't tap out at WrestleMania 13 was enough to bring them on side. It was the moment that made official what most of us had known in our hearts for a while: this guy was one of us.
