CM Punk suddenly quitting WWE the day after Royal Rumble 2014, after reaching a boiling point with creative, had a lot of ramifications on upcoming planned matches, storylines and events. It also affected his partner AJ Lee’s standing in the company, who continued working for the promotion for more than a year afterwards.

She too would leave WWE the night after WrestleMania 31 due to permanent damage to her cervical spine, fulfilling everything she wanted to accomplish in wrestling, wanting to pursue a writing career and overall feeling like she was “caught in the middle" with WWE and CM Punk. Punk was heavily critical of WWE and as a consequence was sued by WWE doctor Chris Amann for defamation. During that year spent without Punk in WWE, AJ Lee had to regularly see the man suing her husband at various live events which couldn’t have been easy.

It was obvious AJ might be leaving a few months before retiring, as very much like Punk, she openly criticised WWE for female performers receiving a fraction of the wage and screen time that male performers do.

Neither Punk or AJ have contemplated the thought of coming back to WWE since.
