10 Times WWE Got "The Guy" Wrong
5. Alberto Del Rio
Like Jinder, many believe Alberto Del Rio was pushed to the top of the company early in his run in order to curry favour with a particular demographic. This time, it was Latino fans, who had supposedly been starved of a genuine WWE star since Rey Mysterio burst onto the scene a decade prior.
Del Rio was a surprise choice to win the Royal Rumble in 2011, not least because he had only made his debut a mere six months prior. It was a classic example of too much, too soon, and in the end his subsequent WrestleMania encounter with Edge felt somewhat low-key.
You can put that down to poor booking as much as the man himself (who is, plainly, a competent and charismatic performer), but given that he never grew into one of the company's biggest stars, there is a nagging sense they simply gave the ball to the wrong guy.
