Arguably the only time Bobby Lashley has been utilized properly since returning to WWE early last year was during his program with Roman Reigns in the summer of 2018. After disposing of Sami Zayn at Money in the Bank, he turned his focus to Reigns and, most importantly, became the new number one contender to the Universal Championship.

The buildup to their bout at Extreme Rules left a lot to be desired, but the match itself was far more entertaining than it had any right to be. Lashley looked the best he had up to that point in his run while Reigns put forth an excellent effort as well. While never officially billed as a number one contender's matchup for the Universal title, it was heavily implied that the winner would face Brock Lesnar for the belt at SummerSlam.

Many expected Reigns to continue the roll he was on and steamroll right past Lashley, which made Lashley's victory that much more surprising. It was a monumental moment in The All Mighty One's career and should have led to him finally going one-on-one at SummerSlam, but WWE had other plans.

In their rematch on Raw eight days later, Reigns avenged his loss to Lashley and punched his ticket to the SummerSlam main event. Fans couldn't believe we were getting Reigns vs. Lesnar yet again and that Lashley was left off the card all together.
