Many wrestlers assumed the role of General Manager over time, although it wasn't too often that they got a second chance at the job. After Bret Hart was removed from the position in 2010, WWE went a different direction by keeping the GM's identity a secret.

In 2010, fans heard email notification sounds during various segments of Raw. Michael Cole would immediately leave his headset to read the emails from a laptop. The bit always began with Cole stating he received a message for the Anonymous Raw General Manager, adding "and I quote" to the directives.

For over a year, fans were left to wonder who was behind the annoying emails. Still, anyone who invested time in the mystery was let down when COO Triple H and John Laurinaitis replaced the laptop without revealing the Anymomous GM's identity.

Building up to Raw 1000, the Anonymous GM returned. It seemed odd that the big payoff was Hornswoggle as the mysterious overlord of WWE, but the company attempted to poke fun at two things fans hated: when 'Swoggle was previously declared Mr McMahon's illegitimate son and when the GM mystery was left unsolved.
