SummerSlam 2016 was set to play host to Randy Orton's first WWE match in close to a year, and the company found a blockbuster opponent for his comeback. It doesn't get any bigger than Brock Lesnar, and few fans were disappointed when their bout was announced as the night's main event. A fitting headliner for the year's second biggest show, or so it seemed.

The match was a huge letdown. No more than a basic, plunder brawl, it saw the duo fumbling around ringside for most of the runtime, before eventually finding their way back into the ring. Once there, 'The Beast' mounted his opponent, then rained down a brutal barrage of shoot MMA-style elbows, concussing 'The Viper', and busting him wide open.

SummerSlam closed in infamy, with hordes of fans speculating that Lesnar had gone into business for himself, and shot on Orton without warning. In reality, the whole thing was a work, and this was exactly the response WWE were looking for. They'd done such a good job in keeping the finish secret that even Chris Jericho was foxed, as he furiously confronted Lesnar for putting Orton in danger after the bout, though both competitors had agreed to the bloodying earlier in the night.
