10 Times WWE Was Pure Cinema
3. CM Punk Leaves With The WWE Championship
Where were you when Avengers: Infinity War came out?
If you haven't seen it... where have you been? Also, get ready for some spoilers.
To sum it up in one sentence: Thanos had a vision for how the universe should be, he was going to change it to fit his image and then retire.
Sound familiar?
Back in 2011, CM Punk found himself dissatisfied with his place on the card. His contract was expiring the night of Money in the Bank in his hometown of Chicago, so he decided he was going to leave on his own terms.
This isn't kayfabe, Punk really wanted to go.
Punk beat John Cena, Rey Mysterio, and Alberto Del Rio in the same week, then become number one contender to the WWE Championship. Two weeks later he dropped the pipebomb. Like Thanos killing Loki and sending Bruce Banner crashing down to earth, everybody knew what the stakes were now.
Surely, the Chick Magnet wouldn't actually leave Money in the Bank with the title...
The climax of the match came when Vince McMahon made his way to the ring with John Laurentius and called for the bell. John Cena floored Johnny Ace and said he'd win the match on his own. Cue a Go To Sleep and the three count.
CM Punk was the WWE Champion without working for WWE anymore. As he made his way through the crowd with the belt, his mission had been accomplished.
It's a shame WWE ruined their Endgame.
