10 UFC Rivals Who Seriously Can’t Stand Each Other
3. Ken Shamrock And Royce Gracie
Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie's fierce rivalry began after Shamrock admitted that he underestimated his opponent in their first clash at UFC 1 - a fight Gracie won via rear naked choke.
Shamrock - carrying a knee injury from an earlier fight - then refused to compete in the UFC 3 final when he learned that Gracie had been forced to pull out due to fatigue. He wanted to avenge his loss to the grappler and he was finally gifted the chance to at UFC 5, in a contest which was billed as 'The Superfight'. However, this bout would be ruled as a draw after the pair fought for 35 minutes without a winner.
Then, 20+ years after their last fight, the pair finally fought again. This time it was inside of a Bellator cage, but Shamrock again lost to Gracie. However, replays showed that the Brazilian landed an illegal knee to Shamrock's groin and this led to the former WWF star feeling like he was robbed of the victory.
He has since stated in a 2019 interview with Fox News that 'I also know what kind of person he is outside the ring and that I can't see anybody accepting a win knowing that you landed a low shot knowing that you did that and then you just saying, 'Oh yeah, I beat him.'
He also claimed, 'I felt like the opportunities that I had gotten had been changed, all the time rules changing, time limits changing, things that were set up to favor them and not me, and his brothers and his family.'
It's clear that Shamrock still feels as though he has unfinished business with the legendary grappler.
