Matt Hardy trusted that Edge, one of his best friends, would look after his long-term girlfriend Lita on the road while he was at home recovering from major knee surgery. Lita was the love of his life and Edge was a trusted friend and the three of them had been up and down the roads together on their road to stardom. Matt had nothing to worry about until, that is, he found a second cellphone that Lita had been using to text and ring Edge, whom she was having an affair with on the road. The story became a huge news item and people immediately began picking sides. The vast majority of people sided with the heartbroken Hardy and began venting at Edge and Lita at WWE live events. WWE handled the situation badly, awarding Edge and Lita a major push and firing Matt. Okay, so not only had Edge lost his girlfriend and best friend but now he had lost his job as well? Fans were appalled. WWE, perhaps realising they had made a mistake, rehired Hardy and the two had a feud (which Edge won). Adding insult to injury, after losing the feud to Edge Matt was buried on WWE TV and pummelled by resident locker room bully JBL.
