10 Under-Appreciated WWE September PPV Matches
8. Sheamus Vs. Cesaro (Night Of Champions 2014)
Stop me if you've heard this one: Sheaus and Cesaro have a match that starts out with a lukewarm reception, but through sheer physicality and in-ring action, have the crowd in the palm of their hands by the end.
Yes, two years before their infamous best-of-seven series that everyone complained about, but nonetheless delivered every match, Sheamus and Cesaro were programmed on-and-off in 2014, culminating in this blisteringly good match at Night of Champions. Sheamus, then the babyface United States Champion who was lacking direction, defended against Cesaro, a heel who was lacking direction. The crowd really had no reason to care about this match, but that didn't matter to these two, as they kicked, punched, and pummeled their way into the fans' hearts. It may be hard to remember, but Sheamus actually was a very effective energized babyface, and Cesaro of course is a natural as a domineering, technically proficient heel.
Some would argue that their outing two years later at Clash of Champions was their better September outing, and that too was a great match. Ultimately, a shoddy no contest finish combined with that horrifying Cesaro botch that could have paralyzed him gives the Night of Champions match the edge.
If you need an example of why Sheamus and Cesaro work so well together as foes as well as friends, fire up this match on the Network.
