WCW didn't see it in 2001, but Shane Helms ended up being one of the more versatile performers of his generation. Helms was always good in the ring, and there weren't any doubts about it. In a business dominated by giants, Helms had to overcome a size disadvantage and establish a character to set himself apart. Not only did succeed in doing so, but he did it three times. As Hurricane Helms, Gregory Helms, and Sugar Shane Helms, he was able to perform in three different roles and make them all work. During his WWE run he even became one of the top merchandise sellers in the business. Helms was really coming into his own as WCW down and a run as a dominant cruiserweight champion could have helped reestablish the division. One that needed it after the likes of Oklahoma held the title.
