This show also featured the only WrestleMania to crown a new champion following the WWF Championship being vacated. The tournament itself however was the story of the show. After Ted DiBiase was stripped of the World Championship when he bought it from Andre the Giant, Fed President Jack Tunney announced a 14 man tournament that would run throughout the entirety of WrestleMania IV.

Some of the top names in the company were announced including the three former champions the Million Dollar Man, Andre and Hulk Hogan, as well as Jim Duggan, One Man Gang and eventual winner Macho Man Randy Savage, among others. It was an impressive feat to try and squeeze a whole tournament into one show. However, this is also proved to be it's undoing: far too many matches in too short a timeframe, while also fitting in the Intercontinental and Tag Team title matches, and some ancillary filler of no consequence.

The event became another bloated mess, but one that at least had a satisfying ending with Randy Savage toppling the Million Dollar Man for his first WWF Championship but it was a long road getting to that point, and the main reason WrestleMania has largely held tournament finals rather than the whole thing since then.
