10 Untouchable WWE Stars Who Got Special Treatment
7. Chyna
Consider this one a bit of a cheat, because beloved female trailblazer Chyna was politically untouchable…until she wasn’t. Chris Jericho wrote in one of his books that he was ripped a new one by an angry Vince McMahon backstage for accidentally hitting Chyna with an errant shot during one of their matches in 1999. Chyna wrestled the men and held her own, but she was heavily protected. That sometimes meant everybody had to tiptoe around her.
A real life split from Triple H changed everything. Suddenly, Chyna went from untouchable to expendable seemingly overnight. She didn't hold the same political sway as before, and the 'Ninth Wonder' no longer had McMahon's ear by way of association to Hunter either. 'The Game' moved on, but Chyna wasn't quite finished with trying to assert her dominance where possible.
Jim Ross has told the world via his 'Grilling JR' podcast series how appalled Chyna was by the thought of moving into the Women's Title hunt in 2001. She didn't want to work with Ivory, Lita and the like. Instead, Chyna believed she should be working opposite top male stars like Steve Austin. Ross had some tricky negotiations on his hands when she also demanded the same salary as 'Stone Cold'.
That was never going to happen.
The WWF persisted with bids to placate Chyna and put various contract offers on the table until she left in late-2001. Tragically, her life took several dark turns after that. She'd never come anywhere close to the special feel her initial 1997-2000 run had, and that seemed to eat away at the highly self-critical person behind the muscles.
