6. Triple H

Critics have been telling the same story since the late-1990s: Triple H married his way into superstardom by getting romantically linked to Vince McMahon's daughter Stephanie and becoming part of the family. There's no doubt that helped his influence, but it's pretty unfair to claim that Trips only hit the heights he did because of Steph. The dude worked his butt off to succeed generally, and had done for years.

It is hard to imagine Vince (who was known to act on whims depending on which day of the week it was) being so patient with somebody else who was stinking up the ring like Triple H did in 2003 though. Truthfully, he was one of the best in the industry in-ring between 1999-2001, but some of his bouts between 2002-2004 were agonising to sit through.

Regardless of quality, he was pushed relentlessly, and some have even claimed that 'The Game' had the necessary powers to veto planned creative and force a rewrite if he found out he was losing that night. Again, it's hard to know what's actually true without being there as a fly on the wall. Maybe select WrestleMania cards could've done with some outside editing though.

Trips regularly semi-booked himself in the longest match on the biggest show of the entire year. It's like he was trying to prove a point that he was some super-worker who deserved it more than others just because. Fair enough for epics like his HIAC brawl with The Undertaker at 'Mania XXVIII, but less so for his tedious effort vs. Batista at 'Mania 35.

Also, a lot of fans thought the nepotism was too obvious when he was literally handed the new World Heavyweight Title on Raw in 2002 without winning it between the ropes. Hunter didn't need to - he won it in the meetings.
