10 Ups & 3 Downs From AEW Dynamite (Jun 17)
1. ANOTHER Superbly Layered Segment Of Pro Wrestling Television
Le Sex Gods Vs. Best Friends was a banger highlighted by some super stiff and exhilarating sequences crafted by Trent and Sammy Guevara, but it's Chris Jericho's genius that hauled this into 'great' territory.
The impeccable timing of Chris Jericho's saves created a sense of outrageously tense drama in the absence of the "Oh!" of a live crowd. He timed them with millisecond precision. This was an inspired match to book - Le Sex Gods hold such an impressive record that it cast doubt on the outcome - and the action put over the stakes. In a sublime sequence, Sammy Guevara flung himself out of the ring to lay out Chuck Taylor just as Jericho countered Trent's tornado DDT with the Liontamer. Since the barricade finally had an effect on Trent's ribs, this was built towards beautifully.
A lovely match that elevated Best Friends as credible threats, the inevitable Orange Cassidy interference materialised unexpectedly and wonderfully at the finish. He posed as the cameraman - and had done all night! - and tripped up Guevara so casually, in cunning character, that it worked to convince the referee of a mistake.
Deft, dovetailing brilliance that put over one Fyter Fest match and formalised another: this was maestro stuff from Mid South Tony.
