The original Varsity Club were an old NWA/WCW stable featuring the likes of Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotunda, and Rick Steiner. Each man came from a distinct collegiate background, and they worked that into their gimmick. The group wore college-style letterman jackets to the ring, and continually raised the ire of their opponents by bragging about their superior wrestling ability.
Last September, it was reported that WWE were looking to revive the concept. SmackDown is particularly full of wrestlers from strong collegiate backgrounds in American Alpha, Dolph Ziggler, and Jack Swagger. WWE wouldn’t be short on options if they go down this route, and with Shelton Benjamin expected to return to the company when he recovers from injury, they could have one hell of a stable on their hands.
Who better to lead the group than Kurt Angle? As with any potential American Alpha role, Kurt could either serve as the group’s manager, a part-time wrestler, or both. He’s the most decorated amateur wrestler to ever transition to professional wrestling, which makes him an ideal figurehead for the new Varsity Club. His presence would give the stable some much-needed star power and an excellent mouthpiece, setting them off to the best possible start as a unit.
