10 Ways WWE Could Have Improved WrestleMania 36
5. Cruiserweights
Until Jordan Devlin captured the gold (purple?) and took it home to NXT UK, the cruiserweight title and number one contender-ship bouts were a weekly highlight of NXT’s television era.
Of course Devlin can’t travel to defend the belt right now but a WrestleMania spot would have be a well earned reward for the division’s recent MVP Lio Rush. A reprisal of his heated rivalry with Angel Garza would have made better use of “Raw’s Resident Lothario” than night two’s thrown together tag.
The pair had incredible in-ring chemistry and went for each other at Full Sail with what felt like real vitriol. It’s hard for anyone to fill the void left in this strange fan free era. Many talented wrestlers have fallen foul of those empty silences and it’s hard to predict which matches will still work. That said, a fast paced, highflying cruiserweight clash with plenty of smack talk stands a better chance than most.
Given Lio’s subsequent sudden release this entry seems like a particularly misguided pipe dream. Still, whether he had backstage heat again or Vince just didn’t rate him, his inclusion still would have improved ‘Mania.
