10 Ways WWE Has Failed Seth Rollins As WWE Champion

5. No Definite Rival

The Rock had Stone Cold Steve Austin. John Cena has always had Randy Orton. All of the best champions in WWE history have had arch rivals who are a constant thorn in their sides. Seth Rollins has yet to establish himself a major, long-running foe. The obvious choice is Dean Ambrose, who battled with Rollins for much of the latter half of 2014 and fought two singles matches with the champion on pay-per-view this year. There are compelling arguments that Ambrose has already cemented himself as Rollins' major rival, but WWE has horribly botched this process. When Rollins held the Money in the Bank briefcase, Ambrose was a constant thorn in his side and was almost single-handedly responsible for Rollins having to wait until WrestleMania to cash in his guaranteed title shot. This continued for the months after Rollins' victory, until the champion scored a decisive victory over his former Shield buddy in a ladder match at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view in June. Since then, Ambrose has barely crossed paths with Rollins, despite the apparent animosity between the two, letting a variety of different performers have their crack at Rollins. WWE had the clear opportunity to book Ambrose as a constant source of difficulty and frustration for Rollins, but has lost interest in booking the two as permanent rivals. In recent weeks, for instance, Ambrose has willingly stepped inside in order to allow Roman Reigns to become the number one contender. The Ambrose we saw in the ring a few months ago is not the same man who doggedly pursued Rollins only a year ago. Without a major rival, Rollins has been a villain without opposition and, therefore, without intrigue.
