10 WCW Cruiserweight Matches You Should Watch
4. Rey Mysterio, Jr. V. Ultimo Dragon - World War 1996
This match was interesting because of the spectacle that was Ultimo Dragon and the J-Crown Championship, a championship that consisted of eight separate light heavyweight-style championships and of course, WCW never mentioned each of the titles.
The titles were from various organizations including NJPW, CMLL, and WWF. Only five J-Crown championships were ever crowned before the WWF shut the championship down.
Anyone sees a guy wearing a mask and gear that was pink and green with eight championships and immediately you think he’s the coolest. However, Ultimo Dragon was meant to be a heel to start in WCW, it just proved to be too difficult to dislike him. He was incredibly good in the ring and when you add someone like Rey Mysterio, Jr. as his opponent, you know you’re in for a great show.
The two sold their talents and equality with one another for close to 15 minutes. Between the aerial offense, the in-ring maneuvering, and Sonny Onoo’s heelish ways, Dragon and Rey told a spectacular story.
Rey’s resiliency has always been a major factor for him as a wrestler and he showed that throughout the match. Running powerbombs, multiple tombstones, and suplexes were delivered to him all match and finally a massive springboard powerbomb finished it off for Dragon.
