2. David Arquette Becomes WCW World Champion
Vince Russo still defends his decision to put the WCW World Title on a non-wrestling actor in April, 2000. During interviews, the former chief writer for World Championship Wrestling says he would make the same choice one million times over. At the start of the year, Bret Hart was the title holder. Less than 4 complete months later, it was David Arquette. On an episode of Thunder, the actor teamed with DDP to face Jeff Jarrett and Eric Bischoff. As Jarrett pinned Page, Arquette sneaked in and covered Bischoff. As the title could change hands if anyone was pinned in the bout, the former Scream star suddenly became World Champion. Almost immediately, the air was sucked out of the building. Russo can defend his decision all he likes, but the fact of the matter is that pro wrestling fans detested what happened. It left a bitter taste in the mouths of many that an untrained Hollywood star won the richest prize the company had to offer. The WCW World Title had long since been devalued, but this was the beginning of the end.
