10 WCW World Heavyweight Championship Challengers Nobody Remembers
From Barbarians to Animals, these WCW World title challengers didn't live long in the memory.
When looking back on the absolute glut of talent which occupied the WCW main event scene at various points throughout the promotion's storied history, a number of star-studded names tend to spring to mind immediately. For the longest time, the likes of Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, and Sting dominated the top end of the card, with stars such as Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Page, Goldberg, and The Giant all frequently clashing with them over the illustrious big gold belt.
But these eye-catching titans weren't the only stars to come within touching distance of the most prestigious prize in World Championship Wrestling. Far from it.
In fact, over the years everyone from tag team icons to midcarders punching well above their weight were given a shot at immortality. But, if you completely forgot that lesser known Hogans and very Nasty Boyz once went one-on-one with the reigning WCW World Champion, don't worry. You're most definitely not the only one.
From short and sweet squashes, to long forgotten four corners battles, these are the matches that boasted WCW challengers next to nobody can honestly remember.
10. The Barbarian - Halloween Havoc
Many moons before he was playing cards, supping cold ones in the back, and dealing out ass-whoopings alongside Bradshaw on WWE television, Ron Simmons reigned as the WCW World Champion in the early '90s. He was also the first African American star to hold said title.
And while his shocking title win against Vader and defences against the likes of Cactus Jack and Steve Williams are what most fans point to when recalling his run at the top, another less remembered powerhouse found himself going up against the eventual Farooq on a number of occasions around this time.
Not long after parting ways with WWE in 1992, The Barbarian was given a fairly strong push, forming an alliance with the aforementioned Jack, Tony Atlas, Jake Roberts and Butcher Reed. Before long, he was going one-on-one with the squad's bitter rival Simmons at Halloween Havoc '92, and despite failing to prise the belt away from the champ, he continued to war with him on the house circuit for a while after.
The monstrous Barbarian would also challenge Vader for the belt on a later episode of Main Event, but would never lift the prestigious title during his run in the company.
