Widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of lucha libre, Mil Mascaras oddly never wrestled for WWE for any extensive period of time outside of a handful of matches in the late '70s and early '80s.

His sole WWE match came in the 1997 Royal Rumble as part of the company's partnership with AAA at the time. Joining him in the annual Battle Royal were fellow AAA stars Pierroth, Cibernetico and Latin Lover, but Mascaras was easily the biggest star of the bunch.

The luchadors added some variety to the match and mixed it up with everyone from Vader and Ahmed Johnson to Hunter Hearst Helmsley. However, their solid showings were overshadowed by Mascaras accidentally getting himself eliminated after performing a dive to the outside, not knowing it was against the rules of the Rumble for his feet to touch the floor.

It was a memorable American pay-per-view debut for the legendary luchador, to say the least.

WWE's working relationship with AAA dissolved soon after, making this the one and only Rumble to feature multiple competitors from another promotion. Mascaras was eventually inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.
