Being a world champion in WWE means you are the top guy in the company, or at least that's how it should be. Traditionally, the WWE or World Champion was the guy the company was built around, and they would feature at the top of the card for the duration of their reign.

Despite this, over the years, WWE has had some frankly terrible World Title reigns that fans wish to forget. These reigns rarely come at the fault of the talent in question and the reason for their tenures being poorly received ranges from the champion in question being booked like an absolute joke meaning the audience is unable to take the wrestler seriously, to the champion being booked as a complete afterthought. It is also extremely easy for a decent World Title reign to turn into a poor one.

WWE is notorious for giving up on a talent, meaning that they try to book the champion into the ground, rather than make them a marketable attraction during their reign. With that being said, here are the 10 worst booked WWE World Champions of all time.

10. Jack Swagger

Jack Swagger winning the Money in the Bank at WrestleMania XXVI was an interesting booking move on behalf of WWE. Swagger had all the ability in the world but he struggled with his character and promo work. The MITB victory gave WWE an opportunity for him to grow over the next few months and then finally put the World Title on him once he was ready.

Sadly, WWE didn’t want to wait. They put the World Title on Swagger on the SmackDown following WrestleMania, where he would cash-in on a beaten down Chris Jericho. The reign for Swagger actually started off well. Clean wins over Chris Jericho and Edge in a triple threat match and then against Randy Orton at Extreme Rules were all encouraging signs.

It wasn’t until he entered into a feud with The Big Show that the wheels fell off. It was as if Vince McMahon had suddenly given up on Swagger as he started losing TV matches, and his PPV match with Big Show ended in a DQ. The month after, Swagger would lose the World Title in a Fatal 4 Way match to Rey Mysterio. It was a shame that the reign started off so well but WWE decided that they weren’t interested in booking Swagger as a top guy any more so they simply booked him into the ground.
