What would you do in this situation: You have two of the best workers of all-time in Curt Hennig and Barry Windham and they need a storyline. If you answered "put them in cowboy hats and make them record a country song" then you could have been a member of WCW's booking team in 1999. The West Texas Rednecks were formed as a southern heel group in the late 1990s. Even though Hennig was actually from Minnesota (and well-known for being from Minnesota), WCW still billed him from Texas and made him a cowboy alongside Barry Windham, Kendall Windham, and Bobby Duncum Jr.. The group was formed in order to be a heel faction for rap "star" Master P's No Limit Soldiers to battle. Unfortunately, since WCW didn't understand their own southern audience, they didn't realize that the southern cowboys would actually be cheered by their audience instead of the rappers. The Rednecks even released a song called "Rap is Crap" that got some airplay on some southern radio stations. The entire storyline was poorly planned and the No Limit Soldiers came off as total jerks who didn't deserve their spots on television while the Rednecks were all miscast and being cheered despite being heels.
