10 Worst WCW Main Events Ever

4. Lex Luger vs. Barry Windham - The Great American Bash 1991

Lex Luger vs. Barry Windham in the main event of The Great American Bash 1991 wasn’t exactly a terrible match (though far from good), but the circumstances surrounding it made it painful to watch, and must have been really upsetting to pay for.

The event was supposed to feature Lex Luger vs. Ric Flair in the main event. That’s what the show was being built around, but Flair was asked to take a massive paycut, as Jim Herd, the president of the company at the time, didn’t really understand his appeal. To be fair, the only thing the former Pizza Hut understand understood was pizza.

Flair didn’t like this idea of giving up money he was owed, so he was fired. But now we didn’t have a world champion, so Barry Windham was thrust into the role to take on Luger. But Barry wasn’t championship caliber material at that time, as he wasn’t presented as being a top star.

So Luger beat Windham basically by proxy and the fans were extremely upset throughout. To make matters more ridiculous, Flair still had possession of the belt, which he soon took to WWF. So they had to take the old Western States Title and made it look like the World Title. Luger turned heel that night, and it made no sense and people were even madder than they were going into the show.

But hold on for a moment. You can basically forget everything I just said, because that wasn’t even the real main event that night. It was Rick Steiner defeating Arn Anderson and Paul E. Dangerously inside of a cage that closed out the night in two freaking minutes!

WCW really outdid themselves that night by delivering two-all time duds to end the show.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
