10 Worst WWE Debuts Of The Decade (So Far)
6. The Shining Stars
It's a rare occasion when a new gimmick is considered a downgrade from that of two bullfighters with a costumed midget as their mascot. Nevertheless, that is exactly what happened when Primo and Epico Colon made the shift from Los Matadores to become The Shining Stars.
After several weeks of remarkably unremarkable vignettes, the Puerto Rico plugging partnership made their eventual re-debut with all the vigour of a drunken slug. The gimmick was dead on arrival and nobody in the crowd cared when the Colon brothers stepped through the curtain.
The fundamental problem came from the fact that the gimmick was flawed from the outset. Seemingly existing as an advert for tourism in Puerto Rico, the bizarre gimmick made little sense from a wrestling perspective. The promos awarded them no heel traits while also presenting no reason for them to be cheered outside of their homeland.
As further evidence of the complete lack of creativity behind the gimmick, The Shining Stars' finishing move was also inventively named 'The Shining Star'. If that alone doesn't show the half-assed effort put into this presentation, nothing will.
The fans had a hard time understanding the team's incentives and the Caribbean tandem was seriously lacking character depth. Within a year, the name was dropped and the brothers reverted back to being billed simply as The Colons.
