10 Worst WWE Moments Of 2003
5. Kane’s Unmasking Is A Huge Letdown
One of the hottest questions on fan lips from his 1997 debut onwards was exactly what Kane looked like beneath that cool, expressionless mask he wore to the ring. The WWF/WWE had been telling people for years that Kane was some horribly disfigured, tortured soul with a mangled face. He'd been burned in fires he claimed had been set by The Undertaker, and he'd never be able to live a normal life because of his injuries.
In 2002, WWE changed their tune by alleging that Kane was a normal, functioning young man who went on dates. The appalling Katie Vick stuff has been covered elsewhere, but it was a stunning retcon job at the time. Back to 2003. By then, the promotion wanted everyone to forget about Katie and focus on Kane's disfigurement again.
On the 23 June Raw, Kane unmasked to show that he was...largely unharmed? Yes, and it was a letdown. This seemingly mangled 'Big Red Monster' just had some dirty marks on his face and half a haircut. He looked like the barber had paused mid-chop to take a phone call and left him looking rather silly to passers by on the street. Embarrassing, yes, but not a life-altering traumatic experience.
Kane wasn’t quite as chargrilled as people thought he would be. Admittedly, unmasking and going ultra-violent did add years to Kane’s run, but the actual moment he took off the mask was lame. They really should've drummed up something more awesome for such a big time reveal. This was even worse than his forgotten unmasking back at SummerSlam 2000.
At least he got to electrocute Shane McMahon's testicles later in the year as an apology.
