SummerSlam 2007 marketed two things for the show. One was the return of Triple H to in-ring competition and the other was the first 1 vs. 1 match on PPV between Randy Orton and John Cena.

The latter of the two was the only highlight of one of the worst SummerSlam PPVs ever. The WWE Title match between Orton and Cena was a great match, which was arguably one of their better matches together in their extended feud. Triple H, on the other hand, would return to face King Booker, in one of Booker's last matches in WWE. The match was nothing special and just was a marketing ploy to make Triple H's return to WWE seem like a huge deal.

The rest of the card was extremely poor. Batista and The Great Khali had one of the worst SummerSlam matches ever which ended in a DQ. Umaga defended the Intercontinental Title against Carlito and Mr Kennedy, both of whom were heels, which in turn made the match extremely awkward and fans had no idea who they were supposed to be cheering for.

Elsewhere on the card, Rey Mysterio also returned to in-ring competition to face Chavo Guerrero in a re-match from the prior year's edition of the event. The rest of the card was filled out with TV level matches with the likes of Kane vs. Finlay and a Divas battle royal offering nothing to warrant a place on a big-four PPV.
