3. The Demon King Returns To Tumble At Extreme Rules (2021)
If it hasn't become embarrassingly clear by now, WWE and demonic spookiness hasn't exactly been a recipe for success over the last half-decade.
But all of the Fiendish misfires in the world still couldn't keep Vince McMahon from unleashing another returning Demon into the mix when fans were finally allowed back into arenas in 2021.
Rather than learning from those prior supernatural fumbles, though, the boss thought it better to book himself into the pointless corner of having Finn Balor's genuinely intriguing comeback play out opposite an all-conquering Roman Reigns. And the results were about as deflating as you could possibly imagine.
Nobody legitimately thought the first-ever Universal Champion would be able to walk out of Extreme Rules with the belt he never lost. And the fact Balor was swiftly shuffled into the background upon making his demonic return and targeting the dominant champ in order to facilitate John Cena's blockbuster challenging of The Tribal Chief at SummerSlam only hammered home his stopgap challenger status.
Also, by the time Balor did finally go full Demon King, the fact Brock Lesnar had already been teed up as Reigns' next real superstar challenger made the sight of the painted being tumbling off a snapped top-rope in the pair's eventual title match feel about as disheartening as it was inevitable.
What a waste.
