10 Worst WWE Title Challengers

2. King Mabel

And speaking of a dearth of challengers, that phrase is probably quite an adept assessment of the situation in 1995. A notoriously poor year for the business, Diesel was the champion at the time, and his opponent at that year’s SummerSlam would be the recently-crowned King of the Ring winner, Mabel.

Having primarily been known as one half of the light-hearted Men on a Mission tag team, Mabel had since assumed the position of “company’s next top heel” and was being bumped up the card accordingly. Unfortunately, though, the move didn’t quite catch on.

That may have been because WWE started pushing a British Bulldog feud with Diesel before he and Mabel had even had their SummerSlam match. Despite that, Mabel’s challenge was a short-lived one, and he soon regressed back down the card before leaving the company in the New Year.

Again, this wasn’t necessarily Mabel’s fault, as it seems he was a victim of the company’s indecision that had been brought about by stuttering business. Okay, maybe it was a little bit his fault, since he had a tendency to injure half of the guys he stepped in the ring with, which didn't make him too many friends in the main event club.

With the likes of Yokozuna, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker in that aforementioned King of the Ring contest, you wonder if they’d have been better of having one of them win the tournament instead and challenge for the belt at SummerSlam.
