10 Wrestlers Who Are Real-Life Heroes
2. Jake Roberts
The troubles that Jake Roberts has had with drugs and alcohol are well documented, from his poor-taste feud with Jerry Lawler over his alcohol abuse, to the infamous Heroes of Wrestling event. His struggles continued into 2012, at which point his health had deteriorated so much that he could barely walk without becoming breathless.
With his financial and drug problems at a new low, Aurelian Smith knew he needed to turn his life around. So, he moved in with close friend Diamond Dallas Page, who would rehabilitate him with a new diet, cleaning up his drug habits and undertaking a new fitness regime in the form of DDP's yoga program.
Within 18 months, Roberts' health had improved dramatically. His mobility became much better thanks to shoulder surgery and Page's exercise regimen, he lost 50 lbs in weight, and, most importantly, he had defeated his long-standing drug and alcohol addictions.
Jake Roberts is an inspiration to all who have fallen on hard times. To have fallen so far and still found the strength to recover is truly something to be admired, and he continues to inspire today after beating pneumonia and muscular cancer.
