It seems only fair that Bret Hart should be on the short list of wrestlers who can claim to have scored a singles victory over Goldberg, given that his career was supposedly ended by the one-time NFL hopeful after an unfortunate kick in the head.

Actually, the Hitman got the better of him twice, with the lesser known of these wins coming on an episode of Nitro in October 1998. Here, Goldberg was liberated from his United States Title after an interference from Sid Vicious, back in WCW for the first time in six years.

Bill was given a shot at revenge a couple of months later when the duo squared off again in the main event of Starrcade 1999 (this is the one where Hart took a boot to the face). Roddy Piper played the villain of the piece this time, calling for the bell even though Goldberg - trapped in a sharpshooter - hadn't tapped.

This, in case you found it too subtle, was WCW's attempt at generating something resembling the sort of buzz that came out of WWE's Montreal Screwjob incident a couple of years earlier. Suffice it to say, it didn't work: they failed to beat Raw in the following night's ratings battle, as they did every week until their demise in 2001.
