When The Bella Twin's debuted in WWE they were not initially accepted by their female co-workers, who banned them from the women's locker room. The duo had to make themselves comfortable with changing in arena bathrooms. This persisted for several weeks before the higher-ups became aware and intervened in the tried and tested method of hazing.

Following this, there have been accusations that The Bellas were fond of playing backstage politics. Maria Kanellis spoke out against the twins accusing them of stopping her return, and also of the return of other female talents (believed to be Maryse and Kelly Kelly).

Nikki garnered heat away from Brie in 2014, when there were rumours circulating that her ego was irritating her colleagues. As a result of reality show Total Divas' success and her relationship with top star John Cena, Nikki allegedly let the increased fame go to her head. It was said that she was constantly bragging and flashing the luxury gifts Cena bought her which was "viewed as crass and tacky by her colleagues."

In time, The Bella Twins have been, albeit often begrudgingly, accepted in the world of pro-wrestling with as much in-ring work as fodder for backstage gossip.
