10 Wrestlers Who Became Involved In Politics

5. Jerry 'The King' Lawler

He may be known as the King of Memphis, but Jerry 'The King' Lawler wasn't so lucky when he tried running for the obviously-lesser title of 'Mayor of Memphis' in 1999. The late 90s weren't exactly Lawler's greatest time, but this didn't stop him putting his name in the hat to become mayor.

Lawler's platform focused on making the streets safer for the good folk of Memphis and also beautifying the city. The King also hoped to improve the quality of education in Memphis, all the while attracting investment, creating parks and improving traffic flow. A pretty healthy platform, I'm sure you'll agree.

Lawler ended up gaining a respectable 11.7& of the ballots, finishing in third place overall. Not a bad showing at all, but it was probably best for him to continue focusing on his role as 'King' and the impending marriage/divorce with The Kat.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
