10 Wrestlers Who Became Involved In Politics

6. Nikolai Volkoff

First things first, let me clear up the glorious portrayal of the big man known as Nikolai Volkoff. He was a Croatian-born Yugoslav who emigrated to Canada to portray a Lithuanian wrestler who wanted to embrace the United States of America and denounce the Soviet Union. Take that, Cold War! Real name Josip Peruzovic, Volkoff now lives on a farm in Maryland and supposedly owns around 100 cats.

Surely this would be enough to get him elect at county level? Well, not quite. Volkoff ran in the 2006 Maryland Republican Primary for State Delegate in District 7 (a lengthy Communist-style title if ever I did hear one) but was unsuccessful. I don't know what happened, but if a crazy Croatian cat man from Canada can't get elected, I don't know who can.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
