10 Wrestlers Who Died In Mysterious Circumstances
9. Neil Superior
Trained by Afa, Neil Superior was a staple of the early-'90s North-East independent wrestling scene, before his controversial passing in 1996.
Observed by fellows guests acting erratically in the hotel he was staying in, Superior was confronted by police. After a physical struggle, which resulted in additional officers being called in, Superior was tackled and restrained. However, as the officers awaited paramedics to arrive, they realised he was no longer breathing.
Pronounced dead at the hospital, an autopsy claimed Superior had died from the combined ingestion of drugs and alcohol. It was also revealed that he had a neurological condition that caused him to sleepwalk, possibly resulting from a wrestling injury.
However, a lone anonymous witness cast doubt on the police's story. Speaking to The Washington Post, the witness contradicted the officer's account, claiming that Superior was not aggressive and was mounted by at least ten officers, who put something resembling a dog collar on him. She also asserted that no attempts at CPR were made, as officers had insisted.
Superior's family subsequently submitted a $350 million police brutality lawsuit against the Ocean City Police Department. After a four-year investigation, the case was dismissed and the decision upheld on appeal, ruling officers had not retorted to deadly force.
