10 Wrestlers Who Got Buried For Someone Else Screwing Up
7. Matt Hardy
Matt Hardy was one of the first prominent social media users among wrestlers in the noughties. And it was using social media that Matt laid into the ‘Rated-R Superstar’ Edge and his ex-girlfriend Lita in 2005, after discovering the two were having an affair behind his back on the road.
As a result, WWE fired Matt, who was still recovering from a severe knee injury at home, after considering his conduct unprofessional. You can of course argue Matt shouldn’t have taken to social media to vent his frustrations but he was emotionally damaged at the time and was reacting accordingly. It’s strange to think Edge could have an extramarital affair with Matt Hardy’s girlfriend and Matt would be the one fired over it while Edge and Lita would be pushed further towards the main event scene but it happened.
Matt has said regarding WWE firing him at the time “It was just poor decision making and I think things should have been handled differently.” After much fan support, Matt returned to the WWE for SummerSlam that year but in his first match back against Edge was KO’d in less than 5 minutes and after his feud with Edge ended up wasting away on SmackDown in forgettable angles and matches until reuniting The Hardy Boyz with his brother Jeff a year later.
