10 Wrestlers Who Left WWE & Became World Class
3. Raven
You'd be forgiven for entirely forgetting Scott Levy's original WWF gimmick, Johnny Polo. Managing Adam Bomb and the Quebecers, Polo was never going to be anything in that company, as proven by his series of lacklustre outings opposite the likes of Rick Steiner, Doink, and Owen Hart. His backstage work as an associate producer for Raw wasn't enough to save his job.
Cue his jump to Extreme Championship Wrestling, where he ditched the wacky suits in favour of a more grungey look, complete with a leather jacket and cut-off denim shorts. It was here where Raven was not only born, but where he became a key player in that company's success throughout the '90s.
Take his rivalry vs. Tommy Dreamer for example. That was a defining feud of both the Paul Heyman-helmed promotion and the 1990s as a whole. Flanked by his Raven's Nest cronies, Scott Levy perfected this character, both through his superb in-ring work and his polished promos. You genuinely believed the hatred Raven had for 'The Innovator of Violence' was real just by the elegant way he delivered his nihilistic promos.
He encapsulated the essence of what a professional wrestling promo was supposed to be about.
Neither World Championship Wrestling, nor the World Wrestling Federation were able to make sufficient use of Raven following his ECW departure. He was simply that good under Heyman's book.
