In 2016 Darren Young was paired with Bob Backlund. It was an odd pairing but gave Young something to do on television. Under his tutelage, Bob became Darren’s life coach with the mantra ‘Make Darren Young Great Again’ often being used on TV. Young adopted Backlund’s Crossface Chickenwing finisher as a result which he picked up a handful of wins with.

Young was getting comfortable with the move, believing it was getting over when all of a sudden it was ripped away from him. WWE banned the move over concerns it was an unsafe manoeuvre. Triple H was the one who informed Young of this, stating a performer like Randy Orton for example with his numerous shoulder issues would have a difficult time in the hold. HHH suggested using Sgt. Slaughter’s old finisher the Camel Clutch instead-but Young was against this and didn’t think it would make any sense given he was paired with Backlund and not Slaughter.

After being released from his contract in 2017, Young revealed he was completely devastated upon being told by Triple H he couldn’t use the move only to later learn Asuka could use the Asuka Lock in NXT (which is a variation of the Chickenwing). Darren commented:

“It broke my heart. I've got pictures of him on my wall in my childhood room. It broke my heart. I cried like a baby backstage and he came over and was like 'Darren, why are you crying?'”
