In March 2004, Chris Benoit achieved his lifelong dream of being cemented as the man in the biggest wrestling promotion on the planet. What's more, it all happened on the Grandest Stage of Them All in the main event of WrestleMania XX by winning the World title. It was a near 20-year odyssey for him until he reached the very apex of professional wrestling by putting on a thrilling performance against Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a triple threat that night.

The Madison Square Garden crowd popped huge when Benoit made Triple H bloodily tap out to the Crippler Crossface. Benoit was already on the verge of tears after he won but burst into them in a big way when he turned to see his best friend in the business Eddie Guerrero across from him in the ring clapping and congratulating him. Both grasping onto their World titles, they hugged and embraced in one of the most emotional moments in all of wrestling.

Fans knew their stories from their humble beginnings in New Japan Pro-Wrestling to being underappreciated in WCW to striving to reach the top of the card in WWE for years. Chris and Eddie considered each other brothers so it meant everything when they both became World Champions at the same time.

However, for all the joy in the ring that night, this remains a staggeringly dark moment in the context of what was to follow for both men. Just over a year later Eddie Guerrero would be found dead on the bathroom floor of his hotel, and a grief-stricken Benoit would spend the following two years spiralling downwards towards the double murder-suicide of his wife and children.
