10 Wrestlers Who Really Never Saw It Coming

9. Wendi Richter

In the case of Wendi Richter, what she didn't see coming was the shock loss of her WWF Women's Championship back in 1985,

12 years before Survivor Series '97, Richter found herself on the receiving end of what's commonly dubbed the original screwjob. Taking place in Madison Square Garden, the two-time Women's Champ was set to defend her prize against masked enhancement talent The Spider - also at times referred to as The Spider Lady - in what was expected to be a routine victory for Richter.

Instead, this bout quickly went array when The Spider started to go off script. A few unplanned spots of offense played out before this perennial jobber forcefully pinned Richter's shoulders to the mat. With a clued-in referee at hand, a swift three-count was delivered and the Women's Title changed hands.

Irate, Wendi attacked her opponent and pulled off her mask to reveal - in classic Scooby-Doo fashion - her long-time rival The Fabulous Moolah.

All of this took place due to Vince McMahon and Wendi Richter butting heads over the star's contract with the then-WWF. Given how she was promoted as a major part of the Rock 'n' Wrestling movement and the first ever WrestleMania, Richter wanted to be paid a wage that reflected that. Having baulked at this, McMahon instead opted to simply have Moolah dethrone the Texan.
