10 Wrestlers Who Should Have Been Megastars By Now – But Aren’t
2. Dean Ambrose
One man who very nearly benefitted from Seth Rollins’ knee injury was his former Shield buddy Dean Ambrose. With the WWE title having been vacated, Ambrose found himself in contention for the belt, only to fall at the final hurdle in losing to Roman Reigns at Survivor Series 2015.
Ambrose then followed that up with a strong showing at the 2016 Royal Rumble, with his showdown with Triple H at the end of the Rumble match garnering one of the biggest reactions of the entire night. Simply put, Ambrose had momentum on his side and was seemingly the fans’ top choice to be WWE Champion.
As we’ve so often seen though, the company doesn’t always give the fans what they want. Despite the surge in Ambrose’s popularity, the powers that be remained steadfast in their intention to push Reigns instead.
Ambrose did get another WWE Championship opportunity in the lead up to WrestleMania 32, but he was never likely to win that one as it would have interfered with the company’s Reigns agenda. Had Ambrose won the title from Triple H at Fastlane Roadblock 2016, he could quite easily have become the megastar that the company continues to lack.
