10 Wrestlers Who Still Have Something To Prove In AEW
3. Matt Hardy
Subjectively, the Elite Deletion match at Full Gear was a lot of fun. Objectively, it was a little out of place and out of time on a stacked Full Gear card.
Plus, the climactic section featuring Sammy Guevara’s rubber legged, bloody bonced evocation of AEW’s worst pay-per-view moment was an odd choice.
Hardy is an eternally beloved figure but his AEW run has proved divisive. He can no longer go in the ring like he used to and the cinematic style he pioneered may have moved past him.
Now that every promotion is offering cinematic spectacles several times a year the Broken Universe’s moment may have been and gone. Hardy deserved his spot in one of the genre’s absolute pinnacles, the Stadium Stampede, both for his legacy and his brilliant performance in the match itself. Perhaps it should have been his swan song.
Hardy has had a great career and there would be no shame in a graceful slide into a managerial or backstage production role. The show time given to his matches might be better used on up and coming talent.
