10 Wrestlers Who Were Secretly The Greatest Intercontinental Champions Ever

2. Ricky €˜The Dragon€™ Steamboat

I mentioned Ricky Steamboat earlier on, as the man who dethroned €˜the Macho Man€™ Randy Savage at WrestleMania III to cut off his 414 day reign of terror with the title. The two had one of the most famous and certainly one of the finest WrestleMania matches of all time, and Steamboat€™s win came as the culmination of a six month long angle pursuing the title. Despite his ability and his popularity, the Dragon only wore the Intercontinental Championship once. He was the only Intercontinental Champion during the whole of the 1980s whose reign lasted for less than five months - and he only had the title for two months. The story goes that the superlative worker was being groomed for a significant babyface run with the Intercontinental Championship, but asked for some time off a few weeks after WrestleMania III to be with his family, as his wife was expecting their first child. WWF management - well, Vince McMahon - didn€™t appreciate Steamboat€™s prioritisation of his family over the business. He got his time off and then some, but was forced to drop the title to the Honky Tonk Man first. As everyone knows, Honky then had the longest run with the title in the history of the Intercontinental Championship, a record which runs to this day. The Dragon was still the man, but McMahon grudges run deep, and even after he returned, his time on television was cut down and his push neutered.
