Batista's return to WWE in 2014 was a huge miscalculation by the company. Re-debuting on the January 20th episode of Raw, he was presented as a babyface, and announced as a participant in the 2014 Royal Rumble. This was all good and well, and plenty of his old fans were happy to see him back on television, but things took a dramatic U-turn at the pay-per-view itself.

At a time when The Yes! Movement was at the height of its power, and the fans were pining for Daniel Bryan's ascension, Batista won the Rumble. Bryan didn't even take part, and the former Evolution man was immediately showered with jeers after eliminating Roman Reigns to take the victory. The negativity endured over the next few shows, and eventually, WWE had no choice but to turn Batista heel, and insert Bryan into the WrestleMania XXX title match.

Batista himself has said that he didn't want to return as face, because he knew the fans would never accept him over Bryan. The company didn't listen: they went against the grain, and it spoiled one of the year's biggest PPVs, though they were fortunately smart enough to right the wrong at 'Mania.
