10 Wrestling Champions Who've Vacated The Most Titles

5. Sting - 4

Sting is the only man on this list to have never vacated a belt due to injury. All of these occurred to serve storylines. In 1989 he was stripped of the WCW Television title after a match with The Great Muta. The ending was a typical 'dusty finish' i.e. a controversial decision, usually involving a referee reversing his decision, named after Dusty Rhodes who was a big fan of booking them in the NWA/WCW. Sting pinned Muta for the 3, but it was later revealed his shoulder was off the mat at 2. Title vacated. After the confusing finish to his hyped match against Hogan at Starrcade 1997 (long story short, the match was restarted for no good reason), Hogan was granted a rematch against the new WCW World Heavyweight champion, which also ended in controversy. As a result, the title was vacated. In 1998 he was one half of the WCW Tag Team champions when he and his partner, the Giant (aka Big Show), dissolved their partnership, also vacating the belts. The WCW World Heavyweight belt was stripped from Sting again in 1999 following the shambles that occurred at the Halloween Havoc PPV. Sting was supposed to defend against Hogan who came out in civilian clothes and lay down for him instead, baffling the crowd. Later in the evening, Sting wrestled Goldberg in a non-title bout, but when Goldberg beat him, he was awarded the belt, sort of. It was vacated shortly after due to the sort of confusion that usually follows a Vince Russo-booked PPV.
