Everyone living in 1996 laughed when the WWF tried to pretend that guys dressed as Razor Ramon and Diesel could get over like Scott Hall and Kevin Nash had. Those guys had moved to WCW, and Vince McMahon somehow convinced himself that the gimmicks were over, not the wrestlers playing them.

Blame Paul Heyman.

Wait, what? Yep, the ECW chief was the one who originally phoned up Bruce Prichard (Bruce recalled this story during his podcast) and told him about a hot prospect called Rick Bognar. According to Paul E, Bognar could do the Razor character and mannerisms better than Scott Hall. Obviously, that'd prove to be false.

Prichard, intrigued by the thought of Bognar's charisma and knowing what his own boss was demanding, made arrangements for Rick to try out the Ramon garb. The rest is history, sh*tty sh*tty history. Heyman has escaped blame for this over the years.

Look out for a reskinned John Cena, played by Tommy Dreamer, on Raw soon. Only kidding.
