10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (Aug 17)
8. Randy Savage & Hawk Came To Blows In NJPW
Tiny managers weighing (at best) 135lbs should not try to break up fights between burly wrestlers backstage at NJPW events. That's a lesson one Sonny Onoo learned the hard way, and he told The Hannibal TV this week that he still doesn't know why he thought it'd be a good idea to get in between Randy Savage and Road Warrior Hawk.
Back in 1996, Onoo tried his best to huckle Savage through the curtain for his match instead of tearing Hawk's head off. Randy's music was playing, and that seemed more important to Sonny than any disagreement with Hawk over a girlfriend back home in Tampa. After a few minutes of going nose-to-nose with his on/off friend Hawk, Savage cooled off and went to the ring.
When he came back, the situation had been completely defused and they shared a beer.
According to Onoo, Savage had made a pass at Hawk's girl in the States, and that didn't sit well with the musclebound Road Warrior. The animosity between both men had boiled over and almost cost Savage his booking that night.
